Dr. Katy Richard Owens grew up in Crosby, Texas in a Cuban-American family and is fluent in Spanish. Dr. Owens graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and then earned her doctorate of optometry from the University of Houston, College of Optometry. She is a licensed Therapeutic Optometrist and is certified as a Glaucoma Specialist. Dr. Owens has been in the optometry field since 2003, when she started working for their family optometrist after her sister told him she wanted to follow in his footsteps.
Dr. Owens had clinical training at La Nueva Casa de Amigos and Good Neighbor Healthcare Clinic in Houston. Her interests include the treatment of ocular disease, surgical co-management, and eye care to patients of all ages. She has participated in the city of Houston See to Succeed program since 2011 providing eye exams and glasses to school aged children in need. She is an active member of the Texas Optometric Association, American Optometric Association, and the Harris County Optometric Society.
When she is not at work, Dr. Owens enjoys spending time with family especially her nieces and nephews. She does not like to cook, but enjoys eating great food and trying new restaurants with her husband, Luke. She likes her cars fast and loud and dreams of owning a ZL1 Camaro. Dr. Owens likes to unwind on the weekends watching movies with her husband while indulging in chocolate and wine. They have 3 dogs; 2 Chihuahuas and a Papillon. She takes evening walks with her dogs or a bike ride around her neighborhood. She takes her most recent rescue, Mr. Buttons, everywhere. He is a fuzzy blind toothless Chihuahua that enjoys going out in his dog stroller or for a ride on the front of her bicycle in a basket.
